Luckily (or not) we have been busy little bees in here. Our May calendar was chock full of baby learnin, baby planning, moving stuff and visits both here and out of town.
Isn’t it the prettiest! Luckily June is alot less pretty meaning its quite a bit emptier. We strategically planned on getting most of the moving and baby stuff out of the way in April/May so we could spend June unpacking. Matthew is working full time most of June and I start having prenatal checkups every week instead of more sporatic. It really made sense at the time and I’m glad we did it but wow, add packing and the nitty gritty of moving to that and has been truly exhausting.
I’ve still been feeling pretty good although I definitely have my days. Days where I really, really do not want to get out of bed as early as I need to. Days where the thought of bending over to pick something up can put me over the edge, but I’m hanging in there – keeping my eye on the prize if you will. The prize of my very own washer/dryer in just 3 MORE DAYS!
We didn’t do anything special, in fact we kind of completely forgot about it. We decided to go out for dinner next week to celebrate, this week was just too crazy to deal.
8 years ago we were in Vegas, how I wish we were there this weekend instead of packing, painting, schlepping, sorting and moving. In any case, one of my biggest regrets was that we didn’t get a professional photographer to take photos for our wedding. Oh 2001, you were so cute. How times have changed. Wedding photos now-a-days are amazing, personalized and creative and I’m not fooling myself into thinking that what we would have had then might be as good as what we’d get now but still. A gal can dream. We don’t even have digital photos of the day, because regular people didn’t even have digital cameras.
So instead of displaying our wedding photo I’ll post one of another handsome couple.
May I introduce you to…
The Karts circa 1973!
I can’t quite figure out what my favorite part of this picture is. its definitely a toss up between my dad’s hair, moustache, tie, lapel and sleeve.
Sharon looks adorable and is almost cracking a smile even! I wonder what they said to make her keep her eyes open…
2 weeks ago we headed to DC (ok a suburb in Virginia) for Michelle’s baby shower – she is due 6 weeks before me and wow, that was a wake-up call! We were in town for less than 24 hours, rolling in late Friday night and heading to the shower at 11am Saturday morning. Well I did. Matthew headed to a pancake breakfast for 1 and then to starbucks to catch up on some work.
It was really fun to see the Florida peeps who made it up for the trip.
Hailey, Danielle & Judi
Judi and my mom have been best friends for 30 years so it’s pretty much like being around family. No, its exactly like that. In fact Michelle and Danielle’s grandma tapped me during the shower and told me that I’m “much nicer now then when I was little” Thanks for keepin it real Grandma!
The shower was really lovely and fun. There were some games but they were low key. eeeeeeeverybody knows I hate games. In fact I heard it was starting so I headed into the kitchen. I was loading up my plate of food when they started the first game and Judi said “ooh Bar, its your favorite part!” My reputation obviously preceeds me. Imagine that.
The second game was actually kind of cute, they put pix on the screen of celebs when they were kids and we had to guess who it was. Now, I did NOT start off playing this game but was sitting next to Michelle helping her when she wandered off around face #4. So I started filling them in. I only got 14 out of 20, not bad but not great right… WRONG.
I won.
Seriously. This was my face accepting my prize. How is this possible that I am the reluctant winner of yet another shower game that I was guilted into playing. There is history there. At Danielle’s shower I won some weird game where you take a clothespin from someone when they cross their legs, then at my friend Christine’s shower I won the diaper raffle. Take me to a shower with you – I’m a sure thing.
Honestly, I swear Michelle smiles. We just cannot get a good pic.
See!
On the way back from the shower we decided to stop in Philly and have a cheesesteak at one of the super famous places.
Looks pretty good right??
It wasn’t so good. It was kind of dry and gross. Very disappointing. I gave it a D. Good fries though.
Its all mushing together at this point. All of a sudden last week I became extremely uncomfortable which is funny because I thought I was pretty uncomfortable before. I think he is head down and by head down I mean GIGANTIC HEAD PUSHING AGAINST MY BLADDER AT ALL TIMES. Now it annoys me to sit for too long. Add that to walking for too long, standing for any period of time and bending and there isn’t much left for me to do comfortably and I still have quite a ways to go.
Know what’s kind of comfortable?Laying on the couch and watching tv. Unfortunately we are moving next weekend and have tons and tons of stuff to do so there’s not much time for that. I am very behind on TV. Please don’t talk to me about Grey’s.
Just today we:
Dropped off laundry
Donated 4 boxes and 3 bags to good will
Picked up a dresser and painting supplies from storage
Purchased additional supplies and odds and ends at Lowe’s
Bought 4 gallons of paint in various colors at the paint store (the special overpriced paint store cause its the only one that had what we needed)
Stopped at new apartment to drop off all that crap
Brainstormed how we will make this disaster of a kitchen work for us*
Answer: we will rip out some of the cabinets and install shelves. Open plan kitchen here we come! We can take out the cabinets because they are held in by 4 screws apiece.
*the floor has already been redone by the landlord and looks great! I know it seems tiny but its bigger than our current kitchen. They are also delivering a new fridge this week.
A few days ago the baby switched positions or something and I really started to feel him alot less. Like ALOT. Like 2-3 times a day instead of his previous activity of something like…hmmm…40-50 times.
A day.
I also started feeling him differently so I was pretty sure it was because he turned. When I woke up yesterday morning and didn’t feel anything after an hour I called the midwife and left a message saying something to the tune of:
“I don’t want to sound like an alarmist or anything but I’d definitely feeling decreased movement the past day or 2, just wanted to check in with you and see what you think”
She called me back an hour or so later to say she wants me to go to the hospital and have a couple of tests done.
The Hospital.
THE HOSPITAL.
Waaaah!!! I seriously do not like the hospital. I don’t even like doctors which is why I have a midwife (and 900 other reasons but its the first reason)
I figured she’s say come on in but no. Hrmf.
Matthew came to get me and we drove over there, it wasnt the shiny hospital in the city that we are delivering in and that I have been to a handful of times, it was a nearby hospital she is affiliated with that I have never been to before and had no idea what to expect.
Things that went through my head on the way to the hospital:
I do not want to have a baby today (obviously)
We are moving in 8 days (!!)
What if I am put on hospital bed rest (scary)
How will Matthew pack the whole rest of the house (well im not really that much help)
If we have the baby today how long do we have to decide on the name (oh jeez)
I’m glad I am wearing socks (I seriously need a pedicure)
We found our way to L&D and before I even filled out paperwork I met the midwife on call and a nice nurse who said why don’t you just fill those out in the room while you are waiting to be seen.
“Cool” I said, “but first show me to your bathroom” (because we already felt like old pals)
She said “its right in your room and can you fill this up please.”
Well weren’t we a match made in heaven!
I got on the table and they hooked me up to this machine, and within about .1000 of a second we heard the baby’s heartbeat all thumpa thumpa and totally fine.
Now I wasn’t worried that he wasn’t fine, because I did feel him moving around. Just not a lot. That’s apparently a warning sign of low fluid and cord problems so its pretty serious.
They gave me a button to hit when I felt him moving and would you know he was like having a little solo baby dance party action in there. What the heck! I felt like a complete and total ass. Relieved for sure, you know. But with a side of ass.
Nice Midwife came in and asked me some q’s. Mentioned that his heartbeat printout was the prettiest she’s seen in a long time. I’m not 100% sure what that meant but I know its good!
Here, maybe you can decide:
What? That means nothing to you??
Yeah.
That’s why we started taking pictures. Not much else to do. I just sat there drinking my water till the midwife came back and said she called our midwife who said to send me home. K. fine.
but first…!
First she pointed to the little cup I filled up earlier and asked if it was mine
then…then…then she said…THAT IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HOW IT SHOULD LOOK!!
my pee! She complimented my pee!
I was so proud! SOOOO PROOOOUD!
Then we left. I think the lessons learned here are:
call your midwife/dr if you feel weird, drink more water, always wear socks
This picture made me think a lot today. I kind of forgot we still had troops in Afghanistan. Its so easy to be worried about money, pregnancy, labor, baby, moving, work, Matthews work, friends, family, fall line up, seeing harry potter when it comes out a week after my due date, etc etc that I sort of put things like this aside until I have room to worry about them too. In my current emotional state stuff like this can make me tear up immediately or stare into space for hours on end. I look forward to the end of pregnancy hormones but unfortunately I am a huge worrier and know it is just the beginning.
Yesterday’s Pictures of the Day at the WSJ were particularly fine, including a US soldier in Afghanistan who didn’t have time to put on his uniform and gets caught by the camera taking up a defensive position in pink I [heart] NY boxers and flip flops.
Its a good thing we are moving soon because Kitty just takes up so much space these days…
I wish.
No matter where you are sitting or what you are doing she has to be touching you at all times. I was on my computer and she crawled between my arm and the keyboard. I thought that was a pretty classic move until this happened:
She actually climbed between Matthew’s back and his computer chair while he was working and just sat there. It looked highly uncomfortable for both but she didn’t budge until I poked and prodded her into it.
A couple weeks ago I was on the phone with my friend Bridget who was telling me all about the ants coming in through the electrical outlets in her house in NJ. Being that was April, and not even that hot yet I was a little surprised. She said they called an exterminator and that 9 out of 10 calls they had were for ants. What the heck!
I pat myself on the back for living in the big cit-ay and not having to deal with eew ants and eew exterminators until that Saturday afternoon when I got home from yoga and open the bedroom windows wide to celebrate the arrival of an early summer.
All of a sudden I notice some ants on the windowsill, the BIG KIND. Ugh, of course we have no form of ant repellant in the house so I had to shut the window and it seemed to slow down. But it was H-O-T. I was thinking of going out to the store and buying some nasty smelly bug killing product when I randomly found this
Ok, I’ll bite…
aaaaand…It totally worked! No more ants. For Freeeeee!!
