I didn’t feel so great today so Matthew took over all baby duties (besides feeding) while I tried to sleep off the pounding sinus headache I woke up with. He also did laundry, took Asher on a walk to the supermarket, and made us a pot of minestrone soup for dinner.
Matthew was off today so we went to one of my favorite places ever, a supermarket. Here are my current top 5 favorite items. The parking is non-existent and the lines be crazy so you know they got me if I’m hauling over there with a baby to get peanut butter.
1. Salty sweet mini brownies. These dont last long so 11/7 will not be a problemo.
2. Best peanut butter ever.
3. Rice. It’s just really good.
4. Spinach artichoke dip. Hey – its no Mara’s artichoke dip but its $2 and goes freezer/microwave/table in 3 mins. Great for when people come over.
5. Naan. Also frozen. Totally delicious addition to at home indian.
Matthew had the brilliant idea to pick up a rotisserie spit attachment for the grill a few weeks ago and our life has never been the same! The roast beef comes out pretty great but the chicken…YUM.
Over the course of my pregnancy I’ve had a few different cravings, although nothing you would think to call weird or bizarre. Yes there’s that whole thing about me eating hamburgers (ok that’s weird and bizarre) but for the most part its nothing special. I just have this thing where someone will say something and it will send me into a little frenzy of want for that particular item until I get it. Nothing is worse than fried chicken. If someone says something that even sounds remotely like fried chicken I want it and (luckily) there really isn’t anywhere close to pick it up. THANK. GOD.
I should probably stop but I read alot of food blogs. They do not help. If you’d like to come over and make me all or just one of these things I will consider naming the baby after you. If not we might have to call him Cupcake Fried-Chicken Piercy. It has a ring, no?
The worst offender of the most crave-worthy post ever via The Pioneer Woman
The truth is the only thing that I constantly crave on a daily basis is a bagel with lox. Lox is on the no-no list and its blatantly paraded in front of me all the damn time. I cannot believe that some random (non-jew!) in the boonies rubbed her love of lox in my face months before I could have it. There is a Murray’s Bagels across the street from the hospital. If Matthew hands me a bagel, I will hand him the baby. I think that’s a fair deal.
We are trying so hard to eat at home every night. With our crazy work schedules and constant traveling we got into the habit of ordering in or going out about half the week and besides trying to save some money I’m just plain sick of the options around here.
We realized that in order to entice us to eat in we’d have to just buy whatever we wanted, since its still way cheaper than take-out.
Matthew has decided to make us a steak dinner once a week since he is taking advantage of my new found (pregnancy) love of the red meat. Between his cast iron skillet method and the awesome spice blend we picked up in Vancouver it is just as good as going out. I look forward to it all week. Mmmm My mouth just started watering.
Thursday morning we woke up too late to see the parade…LIVE! But we Tivo’d it. We made some coffee and started watching, quickly becoming obsessed with its history. People started asking me all kinds of questions I didn’t know the answer to but thanks to the internet we now know just about everything to know about the parade. So happy that’s taking up precious room in my brain!
Guest List: Us, Houseguests Shel and Jaime, My brother Danny, and Jaime’s friend Stephanie from Vancouver who is a freshman at NYU. That brings the Canadian count to 4 and the American count to…3. The irony of that was not lost on me.
We were having a very casual day watching TV, reading, and doing the odd dinner duty as needed. Matthew got a bunch of cooking done Wednesday but still had a bit to do. At about 3:30 we realized we were starving and he went out to get us some lunch and came home with all kinds of cheeses and charcuterie from the store down the street. We were all sitting around enjoying ourselves when the doorbell rang – it was my brother. He told me they were coming at 4:30 but I didn’t think they’d actually be on time! I was still in my PJs.
We sort of kicked it into gear at that point. Matthew and his dad got the potatoes peeled and I set the table.
By the time Steph came at 6:30 we were ready to eat.
We plated the salad before people sat down – and yes it was THE SALAD. Just like I promised. The rest was a buffet.
Turkey: Kosher. Best kind of turkey ever.
Stuffing: Mah Favorite
Roasted Brussels Sprouts: Trying to make Jaime a fellow sprout lover. FAIL. (kid is loco)
Broiled Sweet Potatoes: My mother always makes this so my brother brought them. There is not a marshmallow to be found. Delish.
Matthew’s plate.
Beverages on hand were some kind of wine for the Piercy men (natch) , Dr. Browns Black Cherry for the Jews (NATCH!) and Sparkling Apple and Cranberry juices for the under 21 set.
For dessert Shel made an apple pie and Matthew made sticky toffee pudding.
Jaime and Steph
I’m so glad we kept it casual, it was so much fun. It was Matthew’s first ever turkey and it came out great!!
Another nasty day here in NYC. Matthew started the day cracking jokes about being back in Vancouver. I don’t really know what he was talking about though, cause every time I’m there its all sunny and beautiful.
So we aren’t leaving the house today. We’re cleaning out the office. The place becomes a dumping ground when we’re busy, and weeks of being away have made it unbearable.
I decided that we needed to make something simple and delicious for dinner since we’ll be in no mood to cook.
Enter: The Salad
First seen at Pizza night at Theresa’s. We devoured it.
The Salad is awesome. Its hearty enough to be a dinner salad while still being relatively lowfat and vegetarian. You can follow Martha’s recipe or just do the following
Cut up 2-3 beets (peel first, and make pieces thin/small)
2 carrots
1-2 red onions
toss with olive oil, salt and pepper.
Roast until soft
Cut up 1-2 heads of butter lettuce
Place roasted veggies on top
sprinkle with goat cheese
dress with balsamic and oil and salt and pepper to taste
We are planning on serving it as the first course for Thanksgiving. We have a few extra seats so let me know!
I am aware that my posting has been a bit lax since I went back to work at the office. I seriously don’t understand how people do it 5 days a week and then have a life on top of that. It is exhausting! All the talking to people all day, and the matching outfits to shoes, and the subway. It’s enough to make a girl want to get in bed at 8 every night.
So that’s what I’ve been doing. Pretty much eating dinner and getting right into bed. Matthew was here all week but worked until midnight so I didn’t really see him, and then he left for Maryland. I’m free to do whatever I want all the time and that happens to be catching up on Pushing Daisies and Top Model.
Wha? Is anyone surprised?
Last weekend we did actually leave the house and drove to Montreal for my niece Liliane’s first birthday.
As expected there was quite a bit of this:
There was a also a bunch of this:
of COURSE some of this:
All leading up to this:
ahhhh,
“The Return of the Homemade Skillet Pizza – Francophone Version. Pizza Takes Montreal”
If only they made a really huge circular cast iron pizza skillet thingy we would really be in business. The teeny skillet is a little scary, well…for some people.
It took about 9 hours to make a bunch of mini pizzas that we all split when it came out of the oven, so you’d get 2 bites every 15 minutes. Thankfully we had some wine chilling for Liliane’s party. (Sorry that you didn’t get any delicious rosé Theresa’s friends, we had to wait a long time between pizzas!) All we did all night was make teeny tiny pizzas, wait the 10 minutes for the oven to heat back up and then 2 minutes for them to cook, shove them down and repeat, repeat, repeat. Lucky for us we had the idea to make a salad to go with it. Oh the salad. THE SALAD as it is now known. We did not get pictures of THE SALAD because we were too busy enjoying the act of taking multiple bites in a row but it was so amazing I have made it 2x since we’ve been home. Oh, its just a salad you say? Well you are wrong, its THE SALAD!
Don’t worry, I took some pics when I made it last night.
My new found semi-vegetarianism has led us to a few new recipes. Something I really wanted to try was homemade pizza because well…it’s got pizza in the title.
The Skinny: Instead of making our own dough (ha) we went down the street to Anthony’s and got some from them. Then we sauteed mushrooms and onions and, cut up some fresh mozz and other veggies and defrosted sauce from the freezer.
The Verdict: The pizza was amazing! Each pizza only takes 2 minutes to cook. The annoying part was that we didnt know how it would come out so we did one small piece at a time. This is NOT the method to use at your next pizza party. Its very sloooowwwww. You have to wait a few minutes between for the oven to get hot again, or the crust will not be right. We basically stood in the kitchen eating our salads while waiting for the skillet to heat up. Also – we did not need most of the toppings, we are happy with mushrooms and a lil onion.
The always important upskirt:
Perfection! It was totally worth it! I think Fridays are going to be homemade pizza night at our house.
Since Matthew’s been gone I realized that I don’t really need to cook meat. Like ever. Once I got back from Florida I decided I’d try to eat as little meat as I possibly can for a few different reasons. One, I don’t really like it, Two, its expensive and Three, Its not that great for you. Can I go meatless? – Yes of course. Am I 100% ready to give up my Mom’s chicken soup or Matthew’s grandmas roast on occasion, not so much.
So I have been doing a bit of experimenting to see if I can get a few more vegetarian dinners into the repertoire.
Dinner #1: Lentil Barley Soup
I read about 15 recipes for Lentil Barley Soup before just going for it.
Its basically this:
2 carrots, 2 celery stalks, 1 medium onion, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 medium potatoes
8 cups of veggie stock (or chicken if you want. I used non-chicken broth)
3/4 cup barley, 3/4 cup lentils
Sautee the onion, celery and carrots until cooked. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Add the rest of the ingredients and simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
I enjoyed the soup but will try this recipe again with the addition of spices. It was chock full of protein and really hearty. I just didn’t LOVE it.
Dinner #2: Vegetable Fried Rice
Holy crap the veggie rice was the best thing I have ever made on the first try. The. Best. Thing. Ever.
Vegetables
Rice
Shallots
Garlic
1 Egg
Cut up any veggies you want. I did 1 carrot, 1/2 a zucchini and 1/2 a broccoli because that is what was in the house. Throw them boiling water for 3 minutes.
Take 1 chopped shallot and 2 cloves of garlic, sliced into a pan with a tiny bit of vegetable oil
Add splash of soy sauce to color, after they’ve cooked a bit add the veggies and a little more soy sauce.
Move that whole mess to 1 side of the pan and add a scrambled up egg on the other side. Once that is cooked (30 seconds) chop it up and mix it in with the veggies
Dump 2 cups of cooked rice into the pan, add more soy sauce and stir it up.
Eat yummy deliciousness for dinner, then save the rest for lunch. It is that good.
Dinner #3: Veggie BLT and Salad
I wasn’t really in the mood to cook so I thought I’d just make a huge salad. At the store I came across soy bacon and bought a package to make fake BLTs.
I put the bread into the toaster and by the time it was ready so was the facon. I sliced up the yellow tomatoes I picked up at the far mar then made a big old salad to go with it. The entire meal took about 4 minutes to prepare and was very delicious, it totally hit the spot. Anyone who is scared of facon, get over it. You’ve be eating swine with no problem. Try the fake stuff, its different but tasty.
