Now that the weather is warming up there’s a lot of hanging out on our stoop with our landlords (and upstairs neighbors) and their dogs Maggie and Mishu. Asher said “Maggie” before “Mommy” much to their delight.

Asher really, really, really, really likes avocados. He has them a few times a week and can eat an entire avocado as an afternoon snack. Last night after dinner he kept saying he was hungry but rejected a banana, edamame and various other things. I asked him if he could have anything in the world to eat what would it be he said:

“A-ca-lo”

“Avocado?”

“Yah!”

Of course we didn’t have any and he just kept saying “Mommy? A-ca-lo” “yes honey I know you want an avocado but we don’t have one.” “Daddy? A-ca-lo”

Then today for lunch

FINALLY SOMEONE BROUGHT ME AN A-CA-LO!!!!

We went to visit our friends Bridget and John for John’s 40th birthday yesterday.  This is their eldest daughter Cat patiently waiting for a piece of her dad’s birthday cake. What you can’t hear is Asher screaming “cake!” in the background over and over again.

sunshine day

Its sunny today! This is very exciting because the weather has been absolutely miserable lately. Its either raining, snowing, hailing or freezing going on 11 days according to the weather people. We’ve been back in our jackets, boots and mittens after such a nice break 2 weeks ago.

The last time we saw the sun my good friend Jessica came to visit and she had the most amazing weather, I think it was near 70 (as opposed to you know, 33)

Jessica, Asher and obviously I spent a good deal of time outside. One morning we took a “baby spirit walk” which basically means we head out of the house with no stroller and just follow him wherever he wants to go.

He headed in the direction of the park, and made a beeline for the playground. I actually had to coax him back onto the path because he was insisting on taking the straightest route – which would have led him into a fence.

We hit up the sandbox for a while where we soon realized that even though he LOVES playing with the sand he hates accidentally touching it. I already knew that he really can’t stand having anything on his hands (see finger painting) and guess what…SO DO I. So whatever. Its an annoying trait but if that’s the worst he gets from me its not really that bad.

And its hella funny to watch.

He spent a few minutes wiping the sand off this ledge with HIS HANDS so when he climbed onto it, the sand wouldn’t get…on HIS HANDS.

I don’t get it.

After the sandbox he wandered into the park and we just followed along mindlessly.

Then all of a sudden he turned and headed straight up a pretty steep hill. With purpose.

A truck.

So happy! Then about a minute later a parks worker got into the truck and they drove away.

So sad.

But that’s what a spirit walk is all about I guess.  Luckily “Je-ca” was there to pick up the pieces.

Sometime’s even Mommies aren’t enough. Its nice to have a friend to hold your hand.

discovering brooklyn

Brian Williams declares the NYT “discovery of Brooklyn” the 2010 media story of the year. Hilarious.

“I think the media story of the year of 2010 was the New York Times’ discovery of Brooklyn. Once a day, there’s a story about all the riches offered in the borough,” he said to laughter from the show’s hosts as he continued his satire. “There are young men and women wearing ironic glass frames on the streets.”

“There are open air markets, like trading posts in the early Chippewa tribe,” Williams continued, “where you can make beads, simple beads at home, and trade them for someone to come over and start a small fire in your apartment that you share with nine people.”

1…2…3…BOO!

Asher loves counting to 3 and then having something OUTRAGEOUS happen so this weekend we taught him the seasonally appropriate “1…2…3…Boo!”

Its not high on his list, he much prefers the old classic “1…2…3…TICKLE!” and has been really enjoying “1…2…3…AHHHHHH!” which he does alll.day.long. Its not just screaming, he usually jumps up and down and waves his hands around for full effect.

He can’t really count but he sticks his finger out and goes “feee…feee…feee. AHHHHHH” just kind of randomly throughout his day. Especially if you accidentally start counting something.

He didn’t really get the whole Halloween thing, which I am not surprised by. We didn’t decorate or watch any E-l-m-o videos about it so how would he know. Well I’m not one of those super excited about holidays people plus I am very anti-costume, especially nasty nylon things that cost lots of money. Buuuuuut I hear sometimes you have to do things you don’t want so he was going to have some kind of costume (for free.)

This year I looked at the clothes in his drawer and decided “Rock Star”

Initially I thought I’d iron on a fake band logo, and could do fake backstage passes for me and Matthew but that would take a whole hour of my time so I passed on that idea.

Instead I found this cute guitar tee and his guitar sweatshirt, cool jeans, and chucks. We did spend $10 on the guitar but he LOVES it so its money well spent. Unless you have ear drums and musical taste, then its questionable at best.

We went to a party thrown by one of the Moms (same as last year) and besides seeing loads of adorable dressed up babyfriends they have the great fortune to live on a Halloween Block. which means pretty much every single house gets decorated and the whole block dressed up and hangs out outside.

For real, this was the view from the front door.

People just sit on ther stoops and hand out candy all day. Sometimes cotton candy!

After going down 1 whole side of the street and halfway up the opposite side he realized he could say “Hi!” to all of these people, they give him a shiny thing or 2 and he could wave and say “BAH” and EVERYONE WAS REALLY HAPPY TO SEE HIM. He could even hand his shiny thing to daddy before moving on to the next salutation.

Well forget it. That made his day.

He really started to take on the role

A groupie even showed up in the same exact outfit trying to get his autograph the whole time, it really added to the whole rock star thing.

He lasted a while before he decided to say “BAH” to the Halloween shenanigans and walk all the way home.

See you next year Halloween Block of fun!

a week in review

If you haven’t figured it out by my month-long blog absence I worked full time mid-august through mid-september. Working without a full time sitter = working during naps, at night and really whenever possible. Working for me often means 16hr days and traveling. This time to Cleveland. I was pooped. I’m still pooped. Currently digging out of a hole consisting of piles of mail to be shredded, old work docs to file, asher’s clothes to be organized for fall, toys to be replaced, freezer meals to make, the list goes on.

I’m off for a couple of weeks before I start 2 days a week in October on my next project, leaving plenty of time to hang out with Asher and possibly accomplish one or 2 tasks that need to be done around the house. I hired a sitter for my work days so hopefully I will be like a real live working mom instead of a zombie, trying to cram it all in with not nearly enough hours in the day.

Matthew has been pretty busy so I’ve been kickin it SAHM style as much as possible.

Day 1: Playgroup field trip to the Prospect Park Zoo

We saw ducks, baby baboons, kangaroos and raccoons. We stopped to eat lunch at the barn area and sadly my camera battery quit before we got to the animals.

Day 2: Kidville then a playdate at Sydney’s house with Sydney and Eva.

Our first time at Kidville. We signed up for some trial classes and will definitely go back for more.

I met Sydney and Eva’s moms just before the kids were born. Its so funny to see them playing together. Sydney’s dogs are a big hit.

Day 3: Music Together, a playdate with Otto at our house, then pre-preschool at Charlotte’s house

Pre-preschool theme was sign language. Eh, we tried.

Day 4: Tacos and Fairway. Asher ate 1 and a half tacos. I also ate 1 and a half tacos if that gives you an idea on how much he can eat. I don’t blame him. These are VERY delicious tacos.

Day 5: Impromptu picnic and playtime at the park

Its was a pretty typical week. Lots of running around and chillin with the babyfriends. Lots of fun at the park. Little bit of dad time thrown in. I hope he had a great week, I know I did.
