stealth by design

While reading last week’s New York Magazine I came across this interesting article on how they have been sneaking some really great design into the necessary renovations of city buildings over the past few years.

I think that is pretty cool.

These are the paint colors used around the home of one of my favorite bloggers, Nicole at Making it Lovely. I think they are all great and go together beautifully. Check out her place on the full post here. She really does make it lovely!

it’s a chalkboard world

I am kind of obsessed with decor. I read a lot of design and decor blogs in the hopes that one day I’ll actually have a home large enough to decorate properly. In the meantime I skim the eye candy and sigh.

The problem with reading 30 different sites on a daily basis is that there is so much repetition it can make you anger at the thought of seeing one more owl figurine or ironic poster. People link to other people and a craze is born.

This year’s craze: Chalkboards

Chalkboard Paint – the paint that started it all. I think chalkboards are adorable. In small doses.

I have thought about buying these decals for an office or entryway:

or in a little kid’s room or playroom:

Now I don’t know any people in real life that have any in their homes so it’s still somewhat novel. We are truly bombarded with it on the internet.

Paint your kid’s room! Paint your recycling bins! Paint your refrigerator! Paint your entire kitchen! (?)

Honestly, the people are going crazy with the chalkboard paint and I’m afraid it’s only going to get worse before it gets better.

What’s next? CHALKBOARD TABLECLOTHS??

Oh wait.

Is this for real? Am I the only person who does not want to sit at a table and get chalk all over my hands while eating?

If you go by the trend on the food blogs (all bacon all the time since vosges came out with that bacon bar in 2007) we will be seeing chalkboard decorating ideas for a good long while. Just hopefully not at people’s tables. I’ll tell you where you WILL be seeing it – at Target. They now carry a line of really cute chalkboard wall decals.

rental woes

Wallpaper is real easy to take down right? Because I am dreaming of putting this up behind our bed.

and it was all yellow

I am in love with the chairs in this photo. Well, I’m in love with the window, the wall color, the table and that storage solution on the left side as well. I’m willing to settle for just the chairs.

I have no idea what they are or where they got that fabric but I think I need some yellow in my life.

Assignment #2

This week I learned about the “Av” knobby. Its called Aperture and it allows you to choose to make objects crisp while having a blurry background, or have everything crisp. That’s basically the jist.

My shots above aren’t perfect but you get the point. I definitely need to practice more. This week we are doing “m” which is scary. Its controlling both “Tv” and “Av” at the same time. No more point and shoot for moi.

*I definitely recommend this class if you have a DSLR and no idea what it can do. Here is the link.

Assignment #1

Unsurprisingly I finished my photography class homework an hour and 22 mins before it was due.

I read the lesson materials, watched the video, went through all the email tips and finally figured out that if you turn one dial to “tv” and another to a number you never knew existed you can make moving things look less like this:

slowshutter

and more like this:

fast-shutter

KICK ASS!

The baby just really needed it

I think I’ve mentioned that we are not spending a fortune on the baby stuff. Mostly because (I’m cheap) we have no room for anything, and (really, really, cheap) please – I just got bedroom furniture that we did not have to assemble ourselves last year, he can live with Ikea/craigslist/stuff we found around the house. So much is borrowed and what isn’t…well…doesn’t need to last us for a lifetime.

We decided to have 1 splurge item in honor of the baby’s arrival – a glider, and if you know me at all, you know I’ve spent months searching for the exact one I want. Since its going in the living room and I’d like it to fit into our lives for a good long while I have been being kind of picky. Plus, OMG even the ugly ones are outrageously priced! I refuse to spend any of my hard earned money on something ugly and shabbily put together. Well the clock is ticking and with 5 weeks till my due date I have been getting a little nervous that we wouldn’t have one while the babe was still a babe.

I saw this one on a decor blog a while back and today we finally hunted one down to try out in person.

The above pic is the exact color option and style we chose. I cannot wait for it to arrive in 4-6 weeks! From Canada! Where it is being custom made just for me! Hopefully it gets here before Cupcake but its really down to the wire. I’m not holding my breath.

Yeah, we also got the ottoman. But pregnancy is hard work and hot damn, I earned it!

I’m Back!

I’d like to say that the reason I haven’t blogged in an entire month is because we’ve been so busy the last few weeks but that’s not really true. We’ve been SORT of busy/out of town/houseguests/etc but nothing too out of the ordinary for us.

I take millions of photos and say “oooh that’ll be good for my blog” then do nothing with it.

I’m going to try and catch up some this week and get back into the swing of things in time to disappear again over the holidays. Kidding!

I thought a nice way to ease back into it would be to share the pics I took of my friend Maddie a couple weeks ago.

Here are some of my faves. I hope they make the Christmas card!

please note: funky lighting on some photos is due to the fact that the photographer got impatient when the lighting designer was being too slow on the light pointing and wanted to get going already. also – photographer too lazy to do any touchups at this time.
